A Word From Richard Iron Cloud

| I am in the process
of developing a team from all the Indian schools across
South Dakota to assist schools in reviewing, rewriting
and making active physical education standards that center
on Diabetes Prevention. The cells in many of these children’s
bodies are already becoming resistant to insulin, but
all is not lost, if we can educate them on the disease
and positive lifestyle modifications, they can live a
relatively normal life. This is the challenge that is
ahead of us. |

| In the past our
ancestors prepared their young people for whatever challenges
they had at that time. They trained them so well they
became masters of their environments. The horse is one
example. We became the best horse people on the Northern
Plains. I believe that computers are our next horse. The
young people can do wonders with computers. (Thus the
SNS computers that have been supplied to the Oceti Sakowin
Education Consortium schools will be used to helps students
keep track of their health.) It satisfies their natural
curiosity. Lakota people are a visual people so it is
a perfect match. This is a revolutionary process that
can provide dividends for years to come. |
